Summer Learning Loss

Summer Learning Loss

Summer learning loss is a well-documented phenomenon, with students losing between one and two months’ worth of academic knowledge each summer. And low-income students suffer a steeper rate of loss than their peers – half of the achievement gap seen in reading can be attributed to summer loss.

About two-thirds of the ninth-grade achievement gap between lower and higher income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities during the elementary school years.

Let’s give those schoolers a head start with some intentional non-school-like, fun-filled learning opportunities this summer!
