Ann McKitrick Child Care Training Playdough Recipe

Cook this with kids… but don’t eat it!

Do you like to DIY?

I sure do! Especially when it involves the kitchen and kiddos.

When I was a toddler teacher, we had a tray with all the ingredients for making playdough, measuring cups and spoons, and an old saucepan with a tattered recipe card in it.

Whenever the time seemed right, we’d pull out that tray and together with the children make a fresh batch of playdough. We’d let them pour the flour, salt, water and oil and take turns stirring. Then together as a group, we’d take it to the kitchen where our cook would finish it off on the stove, bringing it back to the classroom when it was still warm but cooled enough for the children to knead it to finish off the process.

Playdough is a time-tested activity that’s enjoyed by both children and grownups. I happen to love playing with it, especially alongside a group of talkative, curious children. 👧🏽👦🧒🏻👶🏼

It
encourages fine-motor development, imaginative play, social-emotional development and often will help a child who’s having difficulty finding some self-regulation.

In this video, I demonstrate how to make playdough using common ingredients you have in your kitchen. The recipe is attached, along with a recipe for gluten-free playdough!

This video was created for parents and it’s also great for teachers, especially new ones. 🙌🏽
