Circle time – where children move from “I and me” to “us and we”.
It’s recommended that we gather for whole group or circle time at least twice, sometimes three times per day, depending on how your day is organized. Circle time allows for sharing of information and ideas, introducing new topics, teaching concepts and skills, fosters language development and helps children engage in social interaction with peers. This course will teach you to plan and implement informative, engaging circle times, whether you work with infants, toddlers, preschoolers or school-agers. You will learn what’s involved in planning, what children learn, and how circle benefits each child individually as well as bringing class together as a community.
As you go through the course, you’ll have the opportunity to plan a circle time for your class, using information and suggestions given. You’ll view videos of different age groups in circle for ideas that you can use in your own class. Handouts include how you can create a “chooser bag” – a great tool for calling on children that supports cognitive skills of observation and discrimination.
This course meets required pre-service training for new child care employees and which must be completed before working with children. It also meets required annual training requirements for teachers and directors.
