Sometimes you are the first to observe behaviors associated with autism in young children.
With children, understanding development is important. You may observe children who have difficulties playing with others, communicating or have rigid behaviors and other problems that make it hard for them to manage in the classroom. These behaviors are often associated with autism spectrum disorder – and your ability to recognize the symptoms will be helpful in supporting the child. You’ll learn about brain development and it’s role in social relationships. You will learn the core cognitive deficits of autism spectrum disorder. You’ll also learn classroom management techniques and ways to make your interactions more appropriate and supportive for children with ASD.
By understanding what’s going on inside that little head, you’ll look at children with new eyes, compassion and renewed energy. Video which demonstrates typical and non-typical behaviors, handouts with tips for working with children with ASD, overviews of symptoms of ASD, Asperger’s syndrome and other developmental disorders are included in the course.
This course meets annual training requirements for ‘care of children with special needs’ for teachers and directors.
